Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said that the number of poor people in Indonesia in March 2015 stood at 28.59 million, or 11.22 percent of the population.

The figure shows an increase by 860 thousand people compared with the number of poor in September 2014 which was 27.73 million, or about 10.96 percent of the population.

"In March 2015, the number of poor people in Indonesia or people with a per capita spending per month below the poverty line reaches 28.59 million, or 11.22 percent of the country's total population," BPS Chief Suryamin told a press conference here on Tuesday.

Suryamin explained that the number of poor in urban areas in March 2015 was 10.65 million, or 8.29 percent of the population. It increased by 8.16 percent if compared with the number of the poor in urban areas in September 2014 stood at 10.36 million or 8.16 percent of the population.

The number of poor people in rural areas also increased from 17.37 million (13.76 percent) in September 2014 to 17.94 million (14.21 percent) in March 2015.(*)
