Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Noted and senior lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution passed away at Pondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta at 10.17 am on Wednesday.

The news about his death came from a text message, sent by Presidential Communication Team Ari Dwipayana, who said that Nasution passed away after being treated in the Pondok Indah Hospitals Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Besides Dwipayana, Industry Minister Saleh Husin also sent a text message about the same news of sorrow.

Born in Batavia (now Jakarta) on July 20, 1934, Nasution had been active in the field of law since his youth.

As the pioneer of Legal Aid and Law Reform of Indonesia, Nasution gained his bachelors degree in law from the University of Indonesia, International Law degree from the University of Melbourne, doctorate degree from Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht in the Netherlands, and the Professor of law from Melbourne Law School, the University of Melbourne in Australia.

He was a Public Prosecutor at Special District Court of Jakarta from 1957 to 1961.

Further, from 1962 up to 1968, he was the Head of Public Relations and Politics at Attorney Generals office.

Simultaneously, he seated in Indonesian Parliament during the period of 1966 until 1968.

In 1969 he was admitted to the Bar as Advocate and found Law Firm Adnan Buyung Nasution and Associates that was became the root of this firm.

One year later in 1970, he established Legal Aid Institute (LBH), the first Legal Aid and Human Rights Organization in Indonesia.

He held a position of the vice chairman of the Indonesian Election Commission (KPU) in 1999 who conducted the first general election in reformation era.

He also became a Member of Presidential Advisory Council of the Republic of Indonesia in 2007 - 2009. (*)
