"We will replace all billboards in Jakarta with LED screens to make the city more beautiful," Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama plans to replace all advertisement billboards with light-emitting diode (LED) screens to increase the aesthetic appeal of the city.

"We will replace all billboards in Jakarta with LED screens to make the city more beautiful. We are now preparing the regulation that will be used as a legal umbrella for the LED project," he stated here on Friday.

He noted that several billboards across the city were in a poor condition as the owners did not want to maintain them nor did they want to take them down, thereby making them dangerous, especially during the rainy season.

"This is the core problem. The owners do not want to take them down, while huge billboards could pose a danger, especially during the rainy season, as they could suddenly fall. They also obstruct the view," he pointed out.

He revealed his plan to replace them with LED screens, so that the city would appear more beautiful similar to other cities abroad.

"Just take a look at the buildings overseas. All of them have installed LED screens. So, why should we not just take a cue from them? That way, we will be at par with other cities in the world," he emphasized.

Basuki said he would immediately take down the billboards after their permits had expired, and their taxes had been paid. (*)
