Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA News) - Two banks in Tangerang - CIMB Niaga and Danamon - have cut jobs as a result of the falling value of rupiah against the US dollar.

CIMB Niaga had offered earlier retirement for eight of its employers and Bank Danamon had done the same earlier, head of the city labor office Abduh Surahman said here on Thursday.

Abduh Surahman said growing number of workers have lost jobs in Tangerang as a result of the weak value of the national currency.

He said so far the labor office have recorded 12,000 workers laid off in Tangerang in the past several months.

The number was believed to exceed 15,000 as there are many workers laid off but not reported to the labor office.

Among the companies laying off workers include those operating garment and metal processing industries, which relied on import for basic materials.

Falling value of rupiah against the US dollar caused a sharp increase in import cost.

Meanwhile, through cooperation with a number of companies the labor office opened a labor market , now offering 6,000 employment vacancies in the service sector.

"The vacancies, however, are much smaller still than the number of workers losing jobs," he said.

Other areas have also reported companies cutting jobs amid the countrys flagging economy.(*)
