Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The West Jakarta District Court has sentenced Wong Chi Ping alias Surya Wijaya from Hong Kong, to death for possessing 862.603 kg of crystal methamphetamine.

Chief Judge M Arifin read the verdict during a trial held at the West Jakarta District Court, here on Friday, saying that Wong Chi Ping was proven guilty of committing a serious crime, having been found in possession of crystal methamphetamine weighing 862.603 kg.

The defendant has committed an extraordinary crime because the illicit drugs could poison the younger Indonesian generation and threaten the survival of the Indonesian nation, Arifin stated.

Besides, Wong Chi Ping had also planned to receive crystal methamphetamine from someone identified by as Ahyi from China, but the ship carrying the cargo sank. Ahyi is now a fugitive.

Wong Chi Ping had smuggled the methamphetamine from the Philippines by ship with the assistance of eight people, identified as Ahmad Salim Wijaya, Sujardi, Syarifudin Nurdin, Tam Siu Liung, Siu Cheuk Fung, Tan See Ting, Cheung Hon Ming and Andika.

The international drug syndicate involved four Hong Kong citizens, one Malaysian, and four Indonesians.

The drug traffickers from Hong Kong are Wong Chi Ping, Cheung Hon Ming, Tam Siu Liung and Siu Cheuk Fung. Tan See Ting is from Malaysia.

The four Indonesians involved in the crime are Ahmad Salim Wijaya, Sujardi, Syarifudin Nurdin and Andika.

Indonesian prosecutors have demanded capital punishment for the nine defendants.

Judges have issued verdicts, including the death penalty for Ahmad Salim Wijaya, 20 years imprisonment and a one billion rupiah fine for Cheung Hon Ming, 18 years imprisonment for Syarifuddin, and life sentences for Tan See Ting, Siu Cheuk Fung and Tam Siu Liung.
