The killings in Paris were cruel and a heinous act."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An Indonesian parliamentary leader has condemned the attacks in Paris Friday evening (Paris time) in which more than 120 people were killed.

"The killings in Paris were cruel and a heinous act," the chairman of the House Commission I overseeing, among others, foreign affairs, Mahfuz Siddiq, said here on Saturday.

"If the perpetrators were indeed ISIS members, this must be part of a plan to drag European countries into armed conflicts in the Middle East," he said.

Russia is now already involved militarily (and) "we know that ISIS interests now encompass (making efforts towards ensuring) involvement of many countries," he said.

He said a pattern of regional conflict is developing in the Middle East and it will continue to spread to other countries.

"We all know that initially, conflicts in the Middle East involved the US, thanks to its intervention in Iraq to topple President Saddam Hussein," he said.

The conflicts later spread to Libya, Syria and Yemen but changes in political regimes did not immediately produce new political formats or better regimes, he explained.

"What has happened is that a new model of conflict, based on multiple factors, has come up and ISIS is only one of the factors involved in it," he said.

The Middle East has actually been used as a conflict arena with the target to reconstruct the map of countries and powers involving state and non-state actors.

After involving the US, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, efforts are now being made, and Paris attacks is part of these efforts, to drag European countries into the fray, the politician from the Justice and Welfare Party (PKS) said.

"The Indonesian government must understand the situation and the emerging condition and take a stance because the conflict will continue to spread, encompassing West Asia, South Asia and later Southeast Asia," he said.

East Asia is now also facing potential regional conflict in South China Sea, he added.

He said the two patterns of regional conflicts, when combined, would create enough possibilities to possibly project even bigger new conflicts.
