Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government will improve connectivity between land and sea transport infrastructure to help development of maritime based areas in the country, an official said.

"One of the biggest challenges in infrastructure development is poor connectivity between land and sea transport infrastructure, a senior official of the public works and housing ministry Hermanto Dardak said here on Friday.

Acceleration of development in coastal area is necessary to help drive the countrys economic development, Hermanto said.

He said the natural resources in coastal areas especially in eastern Indonesia is largely yet untapped because of inadequate infrastructure.

He said the central government already has plan for development of integrated infrastructure in Indonesia.

Earlier, governor of the National Defense Institute Budi Susilo Soepandji said development of infrastructure and maritime connectivity is absolutely necessary to regain the glorious era of maritime in the country.

"Such as by development of sea toll, logistics, shipbuilding industry and maritime tourism," Budi said here on Thursday.

Budi said effective development of sea resources would contributed to national development.

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said Indonesia cooperates with China Development Committee to build seaports with international standards especially in eastern Indonesia.

"Kadin cooperates with China Development Committee in building world class seaports in Indonesia," deputy chairman of Kadin Indonesia Yugi Prayanto said in a ceremony signing a memorandum of understanding between Kadin and China Development Committee here on Tuesday.

Yugi said development of ports and quays is in line with the program of President Joko Widodo to build sea toll and make Indonesia a world maritime axis.

Yugi said the cooperation was inspired by the result of his visit to Guangzhou where loading and unloading take only 3-5 hours ,"very effective and efficient."

"The key to improve efficiency is technology," he added.(*)
