Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Zulkifli Hasan hoped the new House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Ade Komarudin would control the uproar in the institution and ably conduct his tasks based on the peoples aspirations.

"We hope the uproar in the DPR would end in 2016," the MPR chairman stated at the Parliament building here on Tuesday.

He reminded all DPR members of their oath and promises to provide the best services to the people. He said the House must take side with and give priority to the interests of the people, not adversely creating national political uproar.

"It must clearly show that it is taking side with the people. It should no longer encourage political bickering as it is not in line with the peoples interests," he remarked.

Komarudin, senior politician of the Golkar Party, was sworn in as House speaker at a plenary meeting of the DPR on Monday, replacing Setya Novanto.

The Steering Committee of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) in a meeting on Monday endorsed the appointment of Komarudin as new House speaker to replace Novanto.

All political parties factions in the Parliament endorsed the appointment of Komarudin, he added.

"There is a need to fill the vacancy in the DPR leadership, so that it could perform and meet the publics expectations," Jhonny G. Plate, deputy chairman of the Nasional Democrat (Nasdem) Party said, citing the reason for the decision.

The Golkar Party, in a letter signed by its chairman, Aburizal Bakrie, and Secretary General Idrus Marham, proposed the name of Komarudin as the sole candidate to replace Novanto, a Golkar politician who resigned from his post as House speaker following his involvement in the Freeport scandal.

Novanto, who is also from the Golkar Party, had stepped down in disgrace as the House speaker after the House Ethic Council found him guilty of violating the ethical code.

He was found guilty of violating the institutions ethical code in an alleged case of using the names of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla in seeking a stake in the mining company PT Freeport.

Komarudin, who was born in Purwakarta, West Java, on May 20, 1965, joined the DPR in 1997.

Komarudin was chosen by the Golkar Executive Board as the results of the partys National Conference in Bali, with its general chairman, Bakrie.

He will focus on increasing the Houses legislative productivity by urging all legislators to stay committed to fulfilling their duties.

"In 2015, the House only produced three laws. This should be evaluated, and the House must introspect on this, so that it would be more productive," the new House speaker stated in his first address at a Houses plenary meeting on Monday.

Komarudin pointed out that the Houses legislative functioning had drawn significant public attention due to its declining legislative productivity.

Komarudin remarked that the declining legislative productivity was due to the fact that the House spent its time and energy on political bickering.

"Conducting legislative tasks is not solely the responsibility of the DPR but also the government, and hence, coordination and communication should be developed and increased between the two," he added.(*)
