Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta police shot dead one of the suspects attacking police officers on duty to raid a place in East Jakarta believed to be a hide out of drug dealers.

"The name of the man is Ali Badak," General Crime Detective Director of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Sr. Comr.Krishna Murti said here on Thursday night.

Krishna said Ali Badak was shot as he resisted arrest by police.

He said Ali Badak was the main suspect leading the attack that wounded a police officer, Prabowo.

Police also succeeded in arresting another suspect taking part in the attack on the police officers at Jalan Slamet Riyadi, Matraman Raya last Monday.

In the afternoon that day, an anti drug police unit was sent to raid a house at Jalan Slamet Riyadi suspected of being a hideout of drug dealers, but before they entered the house a group of people attacked the unit to protect their leader.

A number of the police officers were injured and one of the officers and an informer trying to escape from the assailants jumped to a nearby river and drowned.

The bodies of the two men were found in different place in the river the day after.

Police already detained seven suspects in the attacks.(*)
