Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - Thousands of people joined a parade to accompany Surabaya mayor-and vice mayor-elect, Tri Rismaharini and Whisnu Sakti, respectively, to Negara Grahadi building where they were inaugurated on Wednesday.

The people, mostly cadres, sympathizers and members of the municipal executive board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), marched from the office of the partys branch on Kapuas Street to Grahadi building.

"About 1,000 cadres and sympathizers took part in the parade," deputy chief of the PDIPs branch in Surabaya, Sukadar, said.

PDIP picked Risma and Whisnu from among the partys cadres to run for the Surabaya mayoral election held on December 9 last year.

"After being inaugurated at the Grahadi building, the party will present the Surabaya mayor and deputy mayor to the residents of Surabaya," he said.

Risma told the PDIP cadres and sympathizers before the parade that she would focus on improving the welfare of Surabaya residents after the inauguration.

During the parade, Risma and Whisnu rode in an open jeep followed by party cadres and sympathizers. The parade trudged through the streets, including Jalan Kapuas, Jalan Raya Darmo, Jalan Gubernur Suryo and Jalan Wali Kota Mustajab. (*)
