"Thank you Google, which is helping to address IUU fishing in the Indonesian waters," Jokowi said.
Silicon Valley (ANTARA News) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) lauded and extended his gratitude to Google for its role in addressing Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the nations waters.

The president visited Googleplex located on 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, on Wednesday afternoon (Thursday morning in Jakarta) after visiting the Facebook Headquarter, not far from Googleplex.

"Thank you Google, which is helping to address IUU fishing in the Indonesian waters," Jokowi remarked, adding that in future, Indonesia will ask Google to provide training and education on Information Technology to empower the digital economy, especially in micro, small, and medium businesses.

President Jokowi also raised the issue of IUU fishing in one of the sessions related to maritime at the US-ASEAN Summit in Sunnylands, California, on February 15-16, 2016.

Jokowi stated that in the context of the ASEAN and the United States, the government had encouraged actions in the maritime field, such as bringing about regulatory improvements, fixing gaps to ensure an effective fishing system, and monitoring the movement of ships.

The president opined that this was an important step since Indonesia had suffered losses due to IUU fishing for several years.

"The losses could reach Rp101 trillion per year, and therefore, law enforcement must be carried out to combat IUU fishing," Jokowi added.(*)
