Gunung Kidul, C Java (ANTARA News) - The Maritime and Fisheries service of the district of Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, is conducting feasibility study of two port projects to be built on the Ngrenehan and Gesing beaches to exploit the fishery potential in the sea south of the district.

Head of the district Maritime and Fisheries service Agus Priyanto said the port of Sadeng has been promoted in status into a fishery port under the Yogyakarta provincial marine and fisheries office.

In order to optimize exploitation of sea fishing, the district administration of Gunung Kidul would propose construction of new fishery ports.

"Currently we are drafting document of feasibility study of port projects in the Gesing and Ngrenehan beaches," Agus said here on Sunday.

In the beginning the district administration OF Gunung Kidul would propose to build a new fishery port in the Baron beach, but the plan was cancelled as that place has been developed as a seaside resort.

"After the feasibility study has been completed we would submit a proposal to the Yogyakarta regional administration and to the Marine and Fisheries Ministry for license and for development budget approval," he said.

Nur Eksan, an officer of the Gunung Kidul marine and fisheries office said in the first 11 months of 2015, the district fish production reached 2,627.4 tons . In the whole of 2014, the production was 4,485.5 tons.

"Tuna and skip jacks dominate fish production of fishermen from the port of Sadeng, Girisubo. The fishermen generally use 10-gross ton fishing boats," he said.

Lobster production is relatively small making up only 0.5 percent of the total production but accounted for around 9.3 percent of the total export value as the selling price of lobster is higher.(*)
