Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has called on the regional heads elected in the 2015 regional elections to steer clear of corrupt practices.

"Within a decade, ten ministers, 19 House members, and some regional heads have been imprisoned. Such incidents should not recur in the case of the new regional leaders," Kalla remarked during the 2016 Government Working Meeting with all governors, deputy governors, district heads, and deputy district heads at the State Palace here on Friday.

The vice president stated that Indonesia needed just and good leaders who were able to boost economic growth as he did not want the budget at the state and regional level to grow, but the economy did not grow well.

"It appears that the budget is largely utilized for operational expenditure rather than to promote economic growth. In the outlying districts, we see Italian-made furniture and luxury cars. This means that the budget is used for operational expenditure and not to encourage development and economic growth," Kalla pointed out.

On the occasion, Vice President Kalla also congratulated the newly elected and sworn-in regional heads.

The vice president emphasized that the central and local governments were tasked with realizing a just and prosperous society through various approaches and steps.

Kalla also reminded the regional heads that the Indonesian nation still faced numerous challenges.

"The situation today is not as good as before as several challenges lie ahead of us," he noted, adding that the challenges also arose due to a changeover from an authoritarian to a democratic government.

The vice president added that good regional leaders should strive to achieve higher goals, positive economic growth, and sound political stability.(*)
