"Corruption happens in all countries. The welfare of the people is low in a country, with a high corruption rate," Kalla asserted.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla attended a function to launch a book on anti-corruption here on Thursday.

The book is titled "Other Side of KPK Accountability and Anti-corruption Activists Institute: Facts and Analysis" by Prof. Romli Atmasasmita.

"Usually, we discuss about the agency or officials involved in corruption, but the book launched today specifically addresses the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and all its successes and shortcomings," Kalla remarked.

The vice president noted that all parties were in one accord that corruption was detrimental to the country and its people.

"Corruption happens in all countries. The welfare of the people is low in a country, with a high corruption rate," Kalla asserted.

The vice president pointed out that some countries, with abundant oil and gas resources, such as Venezuela, Brazil, Nigeria, and Uganda, also had a high level of corruption.

"We, in Indonesia, strongly feel that corruption has been the subject of daily conversations," Kalla added.

In the meantime, Prof. Romli Atmasasmita, the author and director of the Independent Research Institute for Public Policy, explained that his book contained a counter-priori assessment of the views that had been institutionalized in the society against the KPK, by using a non-legal approach that had been neglected.

"This book is an attempt to observe the other side of the performance of the Commission and the role of the community, spearheaded by the ICW (Indonesian Corruption Watch)," he affirmed.

The book launch was also attended by members of the cabinet, legal practitioners, academics, and leaders of the KPK and Supreme Court.(*)
