Sleman, Yogyakarta Province (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Education and Culture Minister Anies Baswedan has conducted an emergency campaign against violence and urged school administrators to establish a unit to detect violence and prevent its occurrence both within and outside educational institutions.

"We hope every school will anticipate acts of violence in its area by establishing a unit to prevent its occurrence both within and outside its premises," Baswedan stated during a visit to the State Junior High School (SMP Negeri) 1 Kalasan in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Province, on Thursday.

Currently, the rise in the number of cases of violence against students has become a shared concern; hence, precise measures are necessary to prevent violence involving students, the minister noted.

"We need preventive efforts against violence involving students, both as the victims and perpetrators," he emphasized.

Minister Baswedan remarked that the Ministry of Education and Culture was currently taking intensive steps to conduct an emergency campaign for preventing violence in schools by again implementing the Education and Culture Ministers Regulation Number 82 of 2015.

"As part of that regulation, schools are required to set up a violence prevention unit comprising teachers, students, and parents. This unit is needed to prevent and detect the early signs of violence," he remarked.

The minister stated that units members were expected to interact with each another to anticipate and stop violent acts before they became rampant.

"We also hope that the members of the society will play an active part by paying more attention to children, especially their own. The active role of communities will be able to prevent various forms of violence in their areas," he added. (*)
