ParCiMon also supports the vision and mission of Jayapura District to strengthen indigenous rights ..."
Jayapura (ANTARA News) - The Embassy of the European Union (EU) is supporting competitive and environmentally friendly community-based economic growth by providing adequate infrastructure in Jayapura.

EU Ambassador Vincent Guerend stated in Jayapura on Monday that the activities undertaken by the Participatory Monitoring by civil society of Land-use planning for Emission Development strategies (ParciMon) program have been in line with the vision and mission of Jayapura District.

"Through capacity-building activities undertaken by ParCiMon, both in technical and institutional aspects, the Working Group on Low Emission Development Initiative (IPRE) in Jayapura District has been able to develop eight mitigation action programs to reduce emissions in the local area," Guerend affirmed.

Vincent mentioned that the eight mitigation action programs developed by IPRE Jayapura District will potentially reduce emissions in the local area by up to 19.2 million tons of CO2-equivalent, or 23.5 percent of the BAU baseline.

"Supported by a strong commitment of the Jayapura Regency to prioritize low-emission development in the local development plans, the mitigation action programs can be directly incorporated in the annual working plan to be implemented by the local government," Guerend remarked.

Guerend also emphasized that ParCiMon in Jayapura was aimed at supporting the local governments in their efforts to reduce emissions from the land sector by striving to encourage better economic growth.

"ParCiMon also supports the vision and mission of Jayapura District to strengthen indigenous rights and to empower sustainable development in the community by helping to conduct participatory mapping in Kampung Asei Besar," Guerend added.

Kampung Asei Besar is a pilot village for the implementation of one of the mitigation action plans proposed by the Low Emission Development Initiative Working Group on the revitalization of sago plantations around Lake Sentani, which potentially accounted for 0.326 percent of the 23.5 percent decrease in total emissions in Jayapura.

Earlier, EU Ambassador Vincent Guerend and his entourage had paid a visit to Papua Province on June 13-16, 2016, to follow up on the support to ensure sustainable green development.
