Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has affirmed that a comprehensive reform is the key for the Indonesia National Police (Polri) to face the future.

"The world has changed at a fast pace. We have entered an era of competition not only among individuals, regions, and provinces but also among countries. Comprehensive reform in the Indonesian Police is the key to facing the future," the president stated in a written address read out by outgoing Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti during a function to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Polri, here, Friday.

Over the past seven decades since its establishment, the Polri has significantly contributed to the nations security, public order, legal enforcement, protection, and services.

The Polri has successfully fought against terrorism and drug offenses, dealt with major cases, and secured the national and international agenda, he pointed out.

"These achievements have been lauded by the government, public, and the world," he affirmed.

The head of state urged the Police to utilize the momentum offered by its anniversary to conduct self-introspection in order to optimize its tasks and functions, particularly with regard to public services.

Jokowi also called for a change in the Polices behavior and institutional system to improve its professionalism in order to produce police officers, who are trusted by the public.

"I hope that through Polri, the state could make its presence felt in the middle of the community to offer security, build social harmony, and serve as a role model in adhering to the legal system," he stated.
