Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) criticized Indonesian property developers building property abroad while many Indonesians are still needed houses.

"Our investors choose to build property buildings abroad while we are still short of 13 million units of house," the president said here on Monday.

Without initiative to take a bold step for change the irony would continue, he told a number of regional leaders at the state palace. .

"An initiative is needed that will commercially attract developers to invest here including in road infrastructure and hospitals," the president said.

He said there are many factors to determine decision of foreign investors to make direct investment in the regions.

"In open competition we are far behind neighboring countries including Thailand and Vietnam,which were once lagging behind us. Now they are ahead of us . Without some bold steps we would never been able to catch up with them," he said.

He said regional leaders including governor and city mayors are the spearheads of development in the regions.(*)
