"We must not pass many laws. We are now cutting by-laws that hinder investment and trade," Jokowi said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo has urged the House of Representatives (DPR) to pursue deregulation and not pass too many laws that hinder the countrys efforts to make progress.

"We must not pass many laws. We are now cutting by-laws that hinder investment and trade," he said in a speech at a meeting with the National Association of Senior Members of HIPMI (ISHI) here on Friday.

The meeting was also attended by DPR Speaker Ade Komaruddin, the Chairman of the Regional Representatives Council, Irman Gusman, Deputy Chairmen of the Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPT), Oesman Sapta Odang and Hidayat Nurwahid, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution and Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto.

President Widodo said that if a new law is produced, there must be regulations that follow.

"There must be PP (government regulation), Permen (ministerial regulation), Pergub (gubernatorial regulation) and others," he stated.

He emphasized that it would be enough for legislative institutions to pass fewer regulations and prioritize their quality.

"No need to make 40 (laws), it would be enough to make only five, but of good quality," he noted.

President Widodo said the government would continue to pursue deregulation and de-bureaucratization to push the countrys progress, including in terms of economy.

"We will continue to do this. We have so far cut 3,150 bylaws that have hindered investment so far," he added.

He further said the government should also continue to formulate economic policy packages, such as the 12th package on housing.

"Permits for building a house have been cut from 33 to 11 and the process for getting them will now only take 44 days, instead of 981 or three years before," the president pointed out. "This is what we will continue to do." (*)
