Vientiane (ANTARA News) - President Rodirgo Duterte will leave for Jakarta on September 8 after attending the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and related summits in Vientiane, Laos.

"President Duterte will fly to Jakarta for a working visit on September 8. He will spend the night there before meeting with President Joko Widodo the next morning and return home to Manila," Philippine presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella noted at the National Convention Center here on Tuesday.

"Certainly, maritime security will be discussed by President Duterte and President Joko Widodo at the meeting. Moreover, the two countries ministers of defense have already discussed it before," the spokesman stated in connection with the issues to be discussed between both leaders, adding that the two sides had yet to determine it.

The two countries defense ministers have discussed the sea lane corridor between the Philippines and Indonesia to safeguard their maritime territory.

"It is almost certain that the two presidents will discuss steps to crush the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group," he stated.

President Widodo and President Duterte will attend the two summit meetings along with other ASEAN leaders on September 6-8.

Until 4:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the ASEAN leaders were still holding a closed-door plenary meeting, with the main agenda of discussing the extent to which each member country has implemented its task in cooperating to realize the ASEAN Economic Community.(*)
