Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The local Jakarta government will build flats for fishermen displaced by the reclamation project in North Jakarta, Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, better known as Ahok, said.

"We are ready to build the flats and a fishing port for the displaced fishermen in North Jakarta," the Jakarta governor remarked at the Energy and Mineral Resources building here on Tuesday night.

"We will build embankments along the coast and flats for the fishermen," he added.

Ahok did not specify the number of flats to be built, but said that it would be enough for tens of thousands of fishermen.

"All the flats will be subsidized for the fishermen but we will not sell it to them, because if we do, they may later sell it to someone else," he said.

Meanwhile, the government has ensured that a total of 12 thousand fishermen in the northern coast of Jakarta will be well taken care of, following the resumption of G Island reclamation project, Co-ordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan stated.

"There are 12 thousand fishermen and all will be well taken care of. They will get flats, in addition to assistance for their children to remain in school," Panjaitan said.(*)
