Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - Flash floods that hit Garut District in West Java on Tuesday evening killed at least 16 residents and left eight others missing.

This was stated in an official report from Garuts Flood Emergency Response Post.

"Around 1,000 residents were evacuated to Tarumanegara Military Resort 062, District Military Command 0611, and to several other shelters," said Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agencys Information Data Center and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a press release on Wednesday.

He said search and rescue workers were continuing to search for flood victims.

Local natural disaster mitigation agency BPBD in Garut District said the following individuals were killed in the floods: H Nawawi, 65; Lis, 35; Dwi Maulana Irshad, 8; Rezal, 8 months; Oom, 70; Ahmat Solihin, 4; Siti, 25; Santi, 38; Repina, 7; and Jana, 35, along with unidentified males aged 70, 35, and 40 years and an unnamed 5-year-old girl.

Flash floods hit the seven sub-districts of Bayongbong, Garut Kota, Banyu Official, Tarogong Kaler, Tarogong Kidul, Coral Pawitan, and Samarang of Garut on Tuesday night.(*)
