Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has called on the Indonesian people to promote the culture of batik, when celebrating the National Batik Day that falls on Oct. 2.

The President congratulated the nation on the National Batik Day on his Twitter account on Sunday.

He emphasized that batik is part of Indonesias ancestral culture.

Jokowi also asked the public to promote batik to make it known internationally.

The batik clothes industry is one of Indonesian creative sector that can boost the national economy, he said.

"Let us develop the batik culture as a creative industry that boost the national economy. Happy National Batik Day 2016 - Jkw," Jokowi tweeted on his Twitter account.

Indonesia has designated October 2 as the National Batik day.

Batik was among the 76 elements inscribed on September 30, 2009, in UNESCOs Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.(*)
