Kupang (ANTARA News) - The status of Mount Iya (637 masl) in Ende District, East Nusa Tenggara, has been raised to alert level II due to increasing volcanic activities.

Head of Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of East Nusa Tenggara Tini Thadeus said here on Wednesday that the authority has raised the mountain's status from normal to alert level II since September 29, on which 17 deep volcanic tremors and seven local tectonic tremors were recorded.

Several weaker tremors also occurred on the mount, which is located on a short peninsula at the southern part of the Flores Island.

"We urged residents not to do any activities within a two kilometer radius of the mounts peak," Thadeus said.

Following the increased alert status, the local authority has prepared some equipment, if needed, such as tents, mattresses, blankets and others logistics.
