Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named the mayor of Madiun as a suspect in an alleged case of corruption related to the construction of a market during the 2009 to 2012 period.

"The KPK has found sufficient preliminary evidence which pointed to alleged corruption in the construction of the Madiun City grand market from 2009 to 2012," KPK Deputy Chairman Laode M Syarif said here on Monday.

The Madiun mayor, identified by his initials as BI, has been charged with violating article 12 (i) , article 12 B and article 11 of Law No.31/1999 as already amended by Law No.20/2000 concerning eradicating corruption.

If found guilty, he may be sentenced to up to 20 years imprisonment and fined up to Rp1 billion.

After the naming of BI as a suspect in the case, KPK investigators searched his office, official residence, the house of his child and his company.

"During the search, the investigators seized a number of documents and electronic goods," he added.

The construction of the market had cost Rp76.523 billion.

The corruption came to the light in early 2012 when the Madiun district public prosecutors office alleged that the tender and construction of the project violated Presidential Regulation No. 35/2011 concerning amendment to Presidential Regulation No.54/2010 concerning the procurement of state goods/services.(*)
