Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla attended a ceremony to commemorate World Tsunami Day, here on Thursday.

On the occasion, Vice President Kalla in his speech spoke about disasters and disaster management and witnessed the assistance the Japanese government presented through the Japan International Cooperation Agency to the victims of the earthquake in the districts of Pidie Jaya, Aceh Province.

After attending the World Tsunami Day event, the vice president left for East Java for a working visit to Banyuwangi District.

The World Tsunami Day was organized jointly by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta.

The UNISDR was created in December 1999. As the successor to the Secretariat of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, it was established to ensure the execution of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.

UNISDR is part of the United Nations Secretariat, and its functions span the social, economic, environmental as well as humanitarian fields.

UNISDR supports the application, follow-up, and review of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction adopted by the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction on March 18, 2015 in Sendai, Japan.

The Sendai Framework is a 15-year voluntary, non-binding agreement that maps out a broad, people-centric approach to disaster risk reduction, succeeding the 2005-2015 Hyogo Framework for Action.(*)
