"We often see in social media provocative materials, hoax, slanders and hatred which, if we are not careful, could divide the nation," Jokowi said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has warned that social media has content that could threaten the unity of the nation.

"We often see in social media provocative materials, hoax, slanders and hatred which, if we are not careful, could divide the nation," Jokowi said when addressing the 18th anniversary of the Indonesian Unity and Justice Party (PKPI) here on Sunday.

He asserted that the threat must be continually observed.

Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, PKPI Advisory Board Chairman Try Sutrisno, PKPI General Chairman AM Hendropriyono, a number of Cabinet ministers and heads of state institutions also attended the function.

The president stated that the fast world change took place from minute to minute, hour to hour and day to day. While one issue is not yet settled, another one has appeared. "This is what is happening in global politics," he said.

He mentioned that while the global economic slowdown has yet to improve and the world economy has yet to recover, another challenge might emerge with regard to the US policy, notably after the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

"We have to move quickly to anticipate changes. if we are a little late, we will be rolled up by history," he said.

Meanwhile, the president continued, there are still many challenges at home, including poverty and economic disparities among regions, between the rich and the poor and unemployed people.

"Although the Gini ratio is down slightly, yet we are still in the yellow position towards the red one," he said.

President Jokowi mentioned that as a nation, the Indonesian people are lucky and should be grateful for having the Pancasila Ideology. "With Pancasila, we can detect and measure a culture that is incompatible with the ideology such as acts of radicalism and terrorism," he said.

Jokowi expects that as a political party with justice and development as its spirit, the PKPI will be a guidance and a means of channeling the peoples aspirations to reduce disparities among regions and between the rich and the poor.

"I want the PKPI to cooperate with the government to create the Greater Indonesia," said Jokowi. (*)
