Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla has lauded and expressed support to the measures adopted by religious leaders who are committed to eradicating modern-day slavery by signing an agreement at the Vice Presidential offices in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The vice president believed that modern-day slavery occurs due to the violation of rules that have been laid down by the government, and it is rampant in different countries.

He noted that the Indonesian government had established several policies aimed at preventing the occurrence of modern-day slavery, with measures ranging from regulated work hours and days and minimum wage to minimum working age and required working conditions.

Moreover, the government had launched schemes to eliminate poverty and healthcare and education schemes.

"In reality, however, modern-day slavery is still occurring in several countries, including Indonesia. There are cases of human trafficking, which means people are working without regulations and licenses, and when they are not being traded, they are being transferred," he stated.

To this end, the religious leaders commitment to spreading awareness aimed at preventing modern-day slavery in the community deserves appreciation.

There are two parties involved in modern-day slavery, the vice president said, adding that it include the ones who enslave and the ones being enslaved.

He called on religious leaders to disseminate the values of humanity to prevent people from enslaving others.

"This especially applies to those who enslave others as modern-day slavery would not take place if people did not start enslaving others. In terms of regulations, the government had laid down a set of rules that need to be followed, but morally, the community needs to be educated in order to prevent slavery from recurring," he remarked.

He believes that the advancement of a nation will also boost the eradication of modern-day slavery practices.
