Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian said that political and security turmoil should not cause foreign investors to stop investing in Indonesia.

"We must defend the investors from leaving Indonesia," he stated during a meeting between the National Police Chief and academicians of Gadjah Mada University in the college area in Yogyakarta on Wednesday.

According to Karnavian, social conflicts occurring in the society, especially those that offend ethnicity, religion, race, and inter-group issues (SARA), have a strong influence on the stability of investment in Indonesia.

Indonesia currently needs investment from developed countries such as Japan and China in order to support the nations development, he stated.

Negative sentiments of SARA issue often arise from certain elements when Indonesia establishes economic cooperation with developed countries.

He noted that the SARA issues are sensitive and could offend anyone and disrupt economic, political, and security stability.

On the other hand, the current high level of economic imbalance or gini ratio in Indonesia also affects the stability of security in the current era of democracy. The high gini ratio of Indonesia, in the range of 0.41, has been indicated by the dominant number of low economic class society.

"Turmoil will arise when the low economic class society dominates the region, especially when all are free to speak," he remarked.

Therefore, the political and security stability must be maintained in order to stabilize the national economic development.

"If Indonesias economic growth of 5.02 percent can be maintained, then in 2035, Indonesia will have a chance to become the worlds fifth biggest economy," he reiterated. (*)
