Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan was named vice president of World Sea Conference opened on Monday in the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United States.

Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainamarama and Swedish Vice Prime Minister of Margot Wallstrom were named Presidents of the United Nations Summit Conference to support implementation of the "Sustainable Development Goals" 14 (SDG14), which was aimed at sustaining the sea and its resources.

As Vice President of the conference, Luhut, representing all Asia Pacific countries will head a number of sessions. He will also give evaluation of the progress made in the session to the presidents of the conference.

As chairman of the Indonesian delegation he would speak about the Indonesian national interest.

"We will explain about Indonesian maritime policy at the U.N, handling of sea plastic waste and offering cooperation in handling sea plastic waste," he said after the conclusion of the first session.

Luhut would also explain about the government policy on IUUF (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing).

"IUUF is a fishery crime , threatening the sustainability of sea resources . Therefore, it is necessary to cooperate to cope with the sea crime," he said.

Luhut spoke about the Indonesian interest , especially on sea plastic waste at a session of partnership dialogue on Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday morning Luhut was to speak about the government maritime policy at a "Plenary Meeting".

The Indonesian delegates included Marine and Fishery Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, Indonesian Ambassador to the U.N. Dian Triansyah Djani, Deputy for Coordination in Maritime Sovereignty Arif Havas Oegroseno, and Deputy Navy Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Achmad Taufiqoerrochman.(*)
