Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The House of Representatives (DPR) on Thursday night named Wimboh Santoso as chief commissioner of the Financial Service Authority (OJK) for the 2017-2022 term to replace Muliaman D. Hadad.

Wimboh garnered 50 votes from members of the House Commission XI, outclassing Sigit Pramono who received four votes.

"We declare Santoso as a new chief commissioner of OJK," Chief of the House Commission XI Melchias Markus Mekeng stated while banging the gavel after the vote counting.

In total, 55 members of the House Commission XI cast vote in the election for the OJK chief commissioner. Wimboh won the election by the vast majority vote, outclassing banker Sigit who has spent 35 years of his time in the banking industry.

One member of the House Commission XI abstained from the voting.

By Thursday night, the House Commission XI still held a closed-door meeting to decide six members of the OJK Board of Commissioners for the 2017-2022 term.

Wimboh is a career bureaucrat who has spent much of time working for Bank Indonesia and the International Monetary Fund. During his career in Bank Indonesia, he once held the post of banking control director from 2010 to 2012 and later chief of BI representative in New York.

During a fit and proper test on Monday (June 5), Wimboh stressed the stability of financial service industry and underlined the need for OJK to establish synergy with Bank Indonesia and the finance ministry.

Stability is very important to mitigate potential financial crisis like what happened in Indonesia in 1998, he noted.(*)
