Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia affirms its commitment to strengthening trade and development cooperation with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), noted a press statement from Indonesias permanent representative in Geneva received by ANTARA here, Thursday.

"Indonesia highlights the importance of UNCTADs successful revitalization, as the UNs major organ, in addressing global trade and development issues," Permanent Representative of Indonesia in Geneva Ambassador Hasan Kleib stated.

The statement was made by the ambassador during a meeting with UNCTADs Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi at the UN Headquarters in Geneva on June 14, 2017.

"Indonesia has an enormous interest in witnessing a strong UNCTAD, as it benefits developing countries in the fields of trade and development cooperation," Kleib remarked during his discussion with the UNCTAD secretary general.

Ambassador Kleib also stressed the need to raise the profile and visibility of UNCTAD as one of the key international organizations in the UN system.

"We must address the challenges that UNCTAD faces, especially in the midst of enhanced roles of other international organizations, such as the World Trade Organization, G-20, and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development," Ambassador Kleib said.

On the occasion, the UNCTAD secretary general lauded Indonesias commitment to strengthening UNCTAD and expressed hope that the sound relations would continue to strengthen.

Kituyi emphasized that efforts to adapt to the current global developments have been partially initiated through the support of member states in the international investment agreement reform and in the participation in the development and discussion of digital economic issues.

Ambassador Kleib also expressed gratitude for the sound cooperation between Indonesia and UNCTAD, which is reflected in several capacity building programs, including the Debt Management and Financial Analysis System and the UNCTAD Train for Trade Management Program.(*)
