Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale jolted the Southwest Sumba Distreat in East Nusa Tenggara Province on Thursday.

Local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency Chief Hasanuddin remarked that the epicenter of the earthquake that occurred at 9.48 am Central Indonesia Time (WITA) was located at 11.50 degrees Southern Latitude and 118.24 degrees Eastern Longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers.

But he said that so far there was no report of damage and casualty from the earthquake, and thus, the local people were encouraged to stay calm.

Indonesias 17 thousand islands are scattered along a belt of volcanic and seismic activity, known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire", and that the area is one of the most quake prone places on earth.
