Pangkalpinang (ANTARA News) - Bangka Belitung Governor Erzaldi Rosman Djohan announced his decision on moratorium in tin mining license to improve control of the mining of the mineral in the province.

The decision followed report of rampant illegal mining causing extensive damage to the environment.

"We want tin mining companies to improve their mining methods, the governor said here on Saturday.

He said the moratorium in tin mining license is issued pending the issuance of new regulation on tin mining.

Under the new regulation mining would be made at once for associated minerals that there would be no digging for the associated minerals after reclamation at the end of tin mining, he said .

During the moratorium there would be no new mining license or extension of license, the governor said, adding, "I hope the new regulation would be ready next month and it would be effective this year."

The moratorium is expected to put a stop to illegal mining and exports of tin ores.

The governor said mining companies had illegally exported tin ore via unregistered harbors.

"This may not be allowed to continue. The tin mining industry should contribute to improving the welfare of the people," he said.

Indonesia is one of the largest tin producers in the world and Bangka Belitung is the countrys largest tin producing region.(*)
