RI to start H1N1 vaccine mass production in August 2010

Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - The production process of swine flu vaccine or H1N1 Indonesia strain has now entered the phase of clinical trials and its mass production will start in August 2010, a pharmaceutical official said.
"The production stages of A-H1N1 vaccine has now entered clinical trials which are last for nine months until July 2010. Mass production will start in August 2010," PT Bio Farma President Director Isa Mansyur said on the sideline of a meeting of pharmaceutical companies here on Thursday.
The clinical trials were to be done on 1,000 people in cooperation with Airlangga University in Surabaya, East Java.
For the vaccine production project in Indonesia, PT Bio Farma had received Rp1.2 trillion to finance f H1N1 and H5N1 vaccines technology development, the official said.
Bio Farma at the early stage got development fund support worth Rp700 billion for plant construction and development of the swine flu vaccines.
"For the clinical trials stage, Bio Farma provided Rp3 billion, and the vaccine production is expected to meet the country`s needs in facing the H1N1 pandemic," Mansyur said.
However, PT Bio Farma had yet to receive information on the amount of vial stocks or the vial buffer stock of swine flu vaccine required by the Indonesian government in anticipating the swine flu pandemic.
According to him, his side expected that the government could confirm the amount of vial stock of the swine flu vaccine to be ordered, so that the production can meet the government need.
"We cannot produce directly without any orders from the government about the number of vial stock. We hope there is immediate decisions on the need of vaccine," Mansyur said.
He pointed out that Bio Farma is one of the world`s vaccine companies which currently developing swine flu and bird flu viccine in addition to Japan, South Korea and Australia. (*)Editor: Heru
