Kendal, C Java (ANTARA News) - Two siblings in Kebonharjo village, Kendal district , Central Java, Romdhon (33) and Joko Utomo (28), fatally beat up their own neighbor, Harjono (41), on Thursday (Oct 22) morning at around 03.00 AM.

The victim was found by the Patebon Police about 200 meters from his home in critical condition, and his mouth was covered in blood after apparently being hit by a blunt object.

One of the suspected killers, Romdhon, said that he and his brother suspected the victim was often stealing junk from the abandoned house of another neighbor. The two siblings did not like this and eventually became so resentful that they beat up Harjono.

"We did not intend to kill him and just wanted to give him a lesson but I didn`t know my brother hit him in the back of his neck with a paving block which eventually killed him," Romdhon said when questioned by a Kendal police officer.

He said he did not see his brother Joko Utomo hitting Harjono with a paving block because at the time he had gone to the nearest police station to report Harjono alleged thievery. Harjono was presumed to have stolen such things as scrapped metal from the abandoned house.

"We had been suspecting him for a long time because the owner of the house said to me that he had often found things missing from his house , and I saw Harjono sitting near the house one night," Romdhon said.

After the beatings, the victim fell unconscious and died on the way to Soewondo Hospital in Kendal.

To avoid the fury of local residents, the two suspects were taken into custody at the Kendal police station which was located only 30 meters from Harjono`s house.

Kendal Police Chief Sugihardi confirmed the incident, saying the case was still being investigated and the exact motive was not yet known.

"We have taken the two suspects to the Kendal police station for a further investigation," he said.

According to Suhihardi , one of the suspects, Romdhon, was known as a village thug who was repeatedly jailed in physical abuse cases.(*)
