Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - A Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) which was being treated at the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Aceh province, eventually succumbed during an operation.
The tiger which was caught in a pig trap, died when the team of doctors of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Syiah Kuala University was cleaning an injury on its hind foot in Banda Aceh, Monday.
A minor operation that lasted about two hours was done by the doctors on a BKSDA operation vehicle which carried the tiger, because it was too weak to be moved.
Tigers from South Aceh Regency were caught in Jambo Apha village on Wednesday (21/10) by the villagers. When caught, its was already very weak. During the week a tiger was roaming around causing fear to the villagers.
The tiger was brought to the Aceh province BKSDA in Banda Aceh on Saturday (24/10) for intensive treatment.
Previously, BKSDA and the vets along with the local government agreed to restore the condition of the tiger before cutting off its right front foot which was seriously injured.
It is feared that its weak condition does not allow it to be t anesthetized, but shortly after cleaning its wound the tiger succumbed.
"Its was very weak, making it impossible cut off its foot. But to save its front leg was not possible," said Munawar Kholis, veterinarian of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
Munawar said that was 130 cm long and 90 cm high received 14 bottles food because it was too weak to eat.(*)Editor: Aditia Maruli
