Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government still has to wait for the results of the ongoing investigation into the Bibit-Chandra case before deciding whether or not to replace the National Police Chief, a senior minister said.
"Those mentioned in the recording must be examined first before any decision can be made. We just heard the recording yesterday and so we still need to confront the inidviduals concerned with the recording. If we rush in taking a decision, it might result in an unfair ruling," Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said here Wednesday at the presidential office.
Djoko made the statement in reply to a question about the demand from several parties in society to replace a number of police and attorney general`s office officials, including the National Police Chief and the Attorney General, because the recording of wiretapped conversations between Anggodo Widjojo and a number of law enforcement officials had indicated alleged engineering aimed at criminalizing antigraft officials Bibit Samad Ryanto and Chandra M Hamzah.
Djoko said the people mentioned in the recording needed to be investigated so that the initial case that led to the naming of Bibit and Chandra as suspects could be uncovered.
"We cannot do it just like that, despite all the pressure. It is not fair if no clarification or confrontation has been made. If they are proven to be involved in a conspiracy, well, we will act against them. But if they are not, we will not do it," he said.
The same procedure would also have to apply to Bibit and Chandra. If they were proven not guilty, they would be freed but if the police and the prosecutor`s office were able to prove them guilty and this was confirmed in court, the two would be punished.
"It is as simple as that. But we have to follow the rules," he said.
Regarding demands for reform in the police and attorney general`s office, Djoko said the reform program in the two institutions had and would be continued including improving the relationships beween law enforcement agencies such as KPK, the police and the attorney general`s office.
"It is a long-term program which cannot be finished in the first 100 days of the present government in office. It may possibly neither be finished within five years as a lot of aspects are involved in it," he said.(*)Editor: Heru
