Nusa Dua (ANTARA) - Countries grouped in the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) in their meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Friday agreed to improve connectivity and the security of bandwidths to improve the quality of their economies.
"In principle, economic progress is influenced by smoothness in telecommunications and informatics. The connectivity will be improved and a protocol will be made to regulate it. There will be joint connectivity in the Asia Pacific region and it has been put into an agreement in the meeting," Minister of Telecommunications and Informatics Tifatul Sembiring said.
Sembiring was the host of the meeting of ministers of communications of the Asia Pacific region and CEOs of telecommunications-and informatics-related companies/
The ultimate goal of the agreement made at the meeting was assuring the quality of life of the people in the region.
Most ministers of telecommunications and informatics in the region attended the meeting including Chinese minister of communications Qinjian Lou, communications minister Lyonpo N Rai of Bhutan, Japanese communications minister Terasaki Akira, the secretary general of the ITU, Hamadoun I Toure and secretary general of APT, Yamada Toshiyuki.
Besides implementation of the agreement the countries at the meeting also agreed to improve regulations on informatics and telecommunicataions to boost flow of investment.
Indonesia`s expenditures in the field in 2009 reach Rp30 trillion spreading in various projects including the single identity number project of the ministry of home affairs and the population identification project of the police.
The flow of funds linked to telecommunications and informatics businesses in the country reached Rp300 trillion a year from both public and private companies. International telecommunications and informatics company networks also operate in the country.
Sembiring said one percent of investment growth in the field in Indonesia could increase national economic growth by three to five percent.
"Therefore in the meeting we in the Asia Pacific region agreed to improve the connectivity. When Taiwan was hit by an earthquake and the internet network was disrupted we lost connections because it was linked with a network which was centered in the US.
An alternative could be taken such as through Hong Kong or others. And this is what we are trying to do," he said.
Regarding security of the network, the minister said, that it had become an exclusive issue for agreement to assure that it would not be misused by criminals with economic, political and other motives.
This has been put in the agreement in the field of content and application development promotion.
"Intellectual property rights must be protected as maximally as possible," he said. (*)Editor: Bambang
