Earthquake jolts Waingapu Saturday

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, on Saturday at 11.29 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB).
The quake`s epicenter was located at 10.81 degrees southern latitude, 118.91 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 23 kilometers, and around 197 km southwest of Waingapu, according to information of the national meteorological and geophysics office, on Saturday.
The earthquake was also 260 kilometers southeast of Raba (West Nusa Tenggara - NTB), 279 kilometers southwest of Labuhanbajo (NTT), 300 kilometers southwest of Ruteng (NTT), and 305 kilometers southeast of Sumbawabesar (NTB).
Indonesia`s 17,000 islands are scattered along a belt of volcanic and seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire," making the archipelago one of the most quake-prone regions on the planet.
Last Thursday, an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted Cilacap, Central Java.
The temblor had no potential to create tsunami and therefore he called on the people to remain calm.
Earlier on Wednesday (Nov 18, 2009) a magnitude 5.6 earthquake also jolted the area.
Its epicenter was located 9.15 degrees southern latitude and 107.50 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 66 km under the sea level, or 214 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya in West Java.(*)Editor: Ruslan Burhani
