Pekanbaru (ANTARA News) - Four Greenpeace activists tied themselves on four container cranes for more than 14 hours at the PT Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper (IKPP)port in Perawang, Siak regency, Riau, on Wednesday.

They remained tied on the cranes, although their food and drinking water supplies had almost finished, because one of the two bags containing logistics which they have brought had been seized by the company`s security.

Dozens of the company`s security personnel and employees had repeatedly and by all possible means to force the activists to stop their protest action which they started at 7 a.m local time yesterday.

After the persuasive approach has not been successful, the company employees have even turned on the cranes, swaying the activists in an attempt to force them to come down.

And the steel arms of the 40-m high cranes were also made to point down to the ground forming an angle of 30 degrees, but the activists still did not budge from their position.

The four activists were among the 12 Greenpeace environmental activists who had climbed the four cranes of PT IKPP, paralyzing the export port.

The activists were Frank Simon of Germany, Norika Maureen (Indonesia), Joel Catapong (Philippines), and Henriette (Netherlands).

When darkness fell, they were still on top of the cranes in the darkness, and merely got some light from the searchlights around the pier.

"They stayed there, although their logistic supply is running out," Greenpeace Media Campaigner for Southeast Asia Zamzami said.

The activists launched their protest by locking the cranes and unfurled "Climate Crime" and "You Can Stop This" posters, forcing the Indonesian government and world leaders to make a commitment to make serious efforts to protect the remaining forests from business expansion in next month`s UN Conference on Climate Protection in Copenhagen, Denmark. (*)
