NU chief meets with pontifical council president

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The general chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama Islamic organization (NU) received the president of the Pontifical Council for Intereligious Dialouge Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran from the Vatican here on Thursday.
In the meeting NU general chairman Hasyim Muzadi was flanked by NU executive Masykuri Abdillah and NU deputy secretary general Iqbal Sullam.
On the occasion Cardinal Tauran expressed gratitude to the NU leadership for its significant contribution to promoting world peace particularly peace and brotherhood among the differenct religious followers.
Hasyim meanwhile said that NU had a strong commitment to safeguarding and developing inter-religious tolerance in the life of the people in the country and the world.
He said NU had a unique corridor with regard to implemention of religious values namely not being extreme nor liberal.
"With this unique characteristic NU would keep fighting for world peace," he said.
He said the characteristic had made NU become a reference for many parties especially with regard to developing a peaceful community order.
Cardinal Tauran earlier met with former NU leader and president KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) at the Wahid Institute office. Gus Dur was flanked by his daughter Zannuba Arifah Chafsoh (Yenny Wahid) who is also executive director of the institute.(*)Editor: Ruslan Burhani
