Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The House of Representatives (DPR)Commission III fully supports proposals to apply the reverse burden-of-proof principle and the death penalty in corruption cases, a spokesman said.

House Commmission III member Bambang Soesatyo made the statement here Wednesday at a meeting with a delegation from the Jakarta Law Students Movement and the Student Executive Board of Sahid University`s Law Faculty on the occasion of World Anti-Corruption Day.

The student delegation came to the parliament to present a petition to include the reverse burden-of-proof principle in the anti corruption law and punish proven corrupters with the death sentence.

Under the reverse burden-of-proof principle, it is the corruption suspects who must prove their innocence, instead of prosecutors or police having to prove their guilt.

At the meeting, the student delegation handed Bambang a 30-meter long banner titled
"People`s Petition to Punish Corrupters with Death" carrying the signatures of students and members of the general public.

Bambang said the students had chosen the right moment (Anti-Corruption Day) to present their petition and the House Commission III fully supported their proposals. The House would keep the petition on record as an input from the people.

Referring to the Bank Century case, he said he would call on the public to tirelessly monitor and watch over the conduct of the House Inquiry Committee to settle the case.

"If the House fails to solve the Bank Century case, that will be its death knell," he said.(*)
