Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government needs to handle border issues systematically, member of the House of Representatives (MPR)`s Commission I, Fayakhun Andriani, said in Jakarta, Friday.
"Neglect and or procrastination will only cause more problems facing the border regions, including transnational crime (terrorism, smuggling, human trafficking, etc.), as well as poverty," he said.
Fayakhun said that the condition of Indonesians living in the East Kalimantan - Malaysia border regions has become cause for real concern.
"Over 70 percent of their need for fuel, electricity and food, has yet to be met, and they received those needs and necessaries from neighboring Malaysia", he said.
More over, the roads to the remote areas are also deplorable, which made it difficult to step up the development of these regions.
In the meantime, Fayakhun Andriadi reminded that we have changed the position of the border regions at priority status, rather than in inferior status.
He hoped this paradigm is not only a lip service, but a top priority, making these border areas a `Gate of Indonesia`, for smooth international relations.Border area improvements cannot be further delayed, he said."This is important to stop transnational crime," Fayakhun Andriadi said.(*)
