Anti-graft body arrests health ministry partner

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Monday detained Budiarto Maliang, former commissioner of PT Kimia Farma Trading, for alleged corruption in the Health Ministry`s medical equipment procurement which caused a loss of Rp9.4 billion to the state.
After a questioning at the KPK building on Monday, Budiarto was driven in a car to Cipinang detention house in East Jakarta.
KPK spokesman Johan Budi said Budiarto was detained in connection with alleged corruption in the procurement of portable X-rays for community health service centers in disadvantaged regions and small islands worth Rp18 billion in 2007.
Budiarto was believed to be involved in the direct appointment of the Health Ministry`s business partner in the procurement of the medical equipment and in the mark-up of their prices.
"Based on the KPK investigation, losses suffered by the state due to the act of the suspect amounted to Rp9.4 billion," Johan Budi said. (*)Editor: Jafar M Sidik
