Cirebon (ANTARA News) - A 41-year-old man, a resident of Tukmudal village in Cirebon district, was on Monday hospitalized as a suspected bird flu sufferer and placed in an isolation ward.

DR was admitted to Cirebon`s Gunungjati General Hospital after showing bird-flu-like symptoms, namely high fever and nausea, since Thursday (Jan 21).

Working as an agriculture and cattle-farming extension officer for a local agriculture and animal husbandry office, DR had had contact with tens of chickens that had suddenly died at Ciawi in Palimanan subdistrict. .

Based on these facts, doctors at the hospital had immediately put him in an isolation ward.

Dr Hj Lucya, a doctor at the Gunungjati General Hospital, said the patient was being kept in the isolation ward pending the receipt of the results of laboratory tests on samples of his blood being done in Bandung, West Java.

"We expect the test results to arrive on Wednesday (Jan 27), Before then, we cannot be sure DR really has the bird flu virus," she said.

The hospital had not long ago admitted at least 10 people with symptoms associated with Acian Influenza but they eventually proved to test negative for the disease.

Meanwhile, Ali Efendi, head of Cirebon district`s agriculture, plantation, animal farming and forestry office, said more than a hundred chickens had died of bird flu in the region in January, 2010. (*)
