Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Fariz N Mehdawi said his government was planning to send more students to Gadjah Mada University (UGM) here.
The Palestinian government considered UGM as an educational institute that was developing values compatible with Palestine`s own, Ambassador Mehdawi said at a meeting with UGM Rector Prof. Sudjarwadi here on Monday.
Three Palestinians were now participating in UGM`s undergraduate program, so Palestine is familiar with UGM, according to the ambassador.
Around four million Palestinians now live in Palestine while about five million others live as diaspora, the envoy said.
UGM Rector Prof. Sudjarwadi welcomed Palestine`s plan to send more students to study at the university.
Since its establishment, UGM has been developing the values of welfare, peace and happiness.
"Since its establishment, the university`s ideals have never changed, namely to fight for the Indonesian people`s welfare," Prof. Sudjarwadi said.
Meanwhile, the rectors of the University of Lampung (Unila) and Palestine`s Gaza University were recently reported to have met to explore the possibility of their institutions cooperating with each other.
Unila Rector Sugeng P Harianto met with his counterpart Syeikh Mohammad Mahmud Shiyam of Gaza University to propose cooperation between the two educational institutions.
"We have been cooperating with various universities in Western countries, and if our proposal to cooperate with the University of Gaza is accepted, it will be the first of its kind with a university in a Muslim country," Sugeng P Harianto said last August 2009. (*)
