Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Rajasa said the names of candidates for Bank Indonesia governor would not yet be made known to the public.

He made the statement in response to rumors that the person for the position would be announced on Wednesday.

"The rumor including the names for the position is not true. Indeed the President has several names of candidates but it is only the President who knows them," he said.

Hatta said the President would only discuss and present the names after the House committee finished its investigation on the Century Bank case to make situation calmer.

"The President will make the decision in the right time moreover Bank Indonesia is still occupied with the House inquiry`s investigation," he said.

He said the decision to determine the central bank governor could not be immediately made because there is certain mechanism that has to be implemented for it.

"The process is common. There is a mechanism. The President has to submit names for the House of Representatives to determine," he said.

Asked if the candidates of the President from Bank Indonesia or outside it, Hatta said he did not know. "It is only the President who knows," he said.

Hatta said the post of central bank governor is very important and the bank could still operate well so far because it has an acting governor held by Darmin Nasution.

When asked to confirm if the President would announce the name of the new BI governor Darmin said he did not know as he is now in Australia.

"I do not know because I am attending a meeting of Asia Pacific and European central bankers," he said.(*)
