Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Malaysia Airlines (MAS) (KLSE:3786) has booked a net profit of RM609.7 million (US$179.4 million) in the fourth quarter of 2009 after including a derivative gain of RM581.7 million compared with RM46.6 million a year earlier.
The net profit for the three months ended December 31, 2009 was a sharp turnaround for the national flag carrier after it recorded a RM300 million net loss in the preceding quarter.
Helped by a 13 per cent drop in operating costs due to lower fuel prices and a rebound in its cargo business, MAS made a small operating profit of RM3.8 million in the fourth quarter after recording operating losses in the first three quarters in 2009.
Revenue however was slightly lower at RM3.3 billion against RM3.9 billion a year ago.
