Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the power to conduct a cabinet reshuffle was in the hands of the President.

"The cabinet is the President`s portfolio and so the President would weigh (it), consider it for the good of the government and the people and would name persons based upon profound consideration," she said at a press conference at her office here on Wednesday.

The statement came following rumours about a cabinet reshuffle after political party factions in the House Committee investigating the Century Bank bailout presented their final views on the case on Tuesday.

Several party factions in the committee viewed some officials were considered involved in irregularities connecting to the bailout.

Minister Sri Mulyani said that the market remained calm despite the rumours because they believed there are procedures and legal system that protect and bind the people, adding the market had also seen what "we have done so far."

"State officials are the same as common people. What makes them different is that they have an authority which may not be misused. The legal system meanwhile already gives a framework for us to carry out the task well with a peace of mind and responsibly," she said.

Sri Mulyani who was the former chief of the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK) that issued the decision to bailout the Century Bank in 2008 said the violations that had been done by the Century Bank owners must be investigated.

She said issuing a policy to prevent a crisis should not be confused with banking crimes, except it is proven that the policy is made upon a collusion.

"There have been no slight indication of it. I do not know them (the Century Bank owners). We have never been involved in bank supervision. What is clear is the KSSK chief must prevent an economic crisis, financial crisis and because there is a legal corridor for it I did it," she said.

She said state officials carried out their duties, tasks and authority based on laws. So, they have a foundation for acting. If they are not protected anyone becoming an official would be confused if they would be criminalized whenever they are considered making a mistake.

"I am facing it with a belief that the policial, legal and administrative processes would go within their corridors," she said.(*)
